The best way to understand colour is to look at a colour wheel. It is largely divided into two groups, warm and cool colours.
Vibrant reds, oranges and yellows are considered warm colours, and blues greens and purples are cooler. To balance your look, you need a warm and cool colour harmony. So why not try a red tie with a blue shirt, or an orange tie with a purple shirt.

A more subtle colour scheme is to use monochromatic colours. Here you match darker variants of a colour with lighter variants. The analogous colour scheme is slightly bolder than using a monochromatic colours. It involves choosing colours next to each other in the colour wheel. An example of this could be wearing a blue shirt with either a purple or green tie.
